Amongst Illidan Stormrage’s most trusted advisors is the proud and resourceful Blood-Elf mage, Kael’thas Sunstrider.
Born of royal blood amongst the elves of Quel’Thalas, his adventures culminated in his appointment amongst the Council of Six, in Kirin Tor (Wizard Council of Dalaran).
However, his rigorous pursuit of magical studies had left him alienated from his own people, after leaving Quel’Thalas and his father, Anasterian Sunstrider for far too long.
As his personal journey takes him through a constant battle of pride, honour, guilt and sorrow deep within, a culmination of treachery, lust for the arcane, and hope for redemption eventually lead him to his rightful place amongst Illidan’s top lieutenants in The Burning Crusade Classic (TBCC).
THE LONG-LOST PRINCE
Kael’thas Sunstrider is the true heir of the royal blood for the Quel’Thalas people (High-Elves), son of their renowned king, Anasterian Sunstrider.
Still, he found his keen interests to be elsewhere, his mastery in the arcane/ magical arts being his chosen path which lead to his appointment as the member of the respected Council of Six within Kirin Tor, in Dalaran.
There, he first met with many legendary WOW characters such as the enchanting wizardess, Jaina Proudmoore, the initially benevolent but brash Arthas Menethil, and even Kel’Thuzad, the later inglorious Necromancer of Azeroth.
Kael’Thas was very fond of Jaina throughout his time in Dalaran, but his feelings were not returned as she harboured feelings for Arthas instead, inevitably making him Kael’Thas’s rival of sorts.
After Arthas had fallen prey to the influences of Frostmourne (becoming a Death Knight), he led his armies of the undead into the peaceful realm of Quel’Thalas, intent on using their Sunwell to bring Kel’Thuzad back to life.
At this point in time, Kael’Thas had lost all semblances of respect and care for the human people of Dalaran, after noting their champion, Arthas becoming corrupted and slaying his beloved elven people out of misguided thirst for power.
Returning back to the destroyed capital city of Quel’Thalas – Silvermoon City – he vowed vengeance upon Arthas and hoped to rebuild his homeland, starting with the destruction of the defiled Sunwell, before renaming his people as the Blood-Elves.
Among the first things that Kael’Thas had done after returning to Quel’Thalas was to rejoin the Alliance coalition in combating Lordaeron’s latest Scourge threat led by Arthas, leaving the trustworthy Lor’themar Theron as Regent Lord of Quel’Thalas to protect their people in his absence (besides his own lack of leadership capabilities and the High-Elves’ distrust).
Hoping to get opportunities to battle Arthas on the battlefield, Kael’Thas and his people were instead constantly exploited and mistreated by the then temporary leader of the remaining forces of Lordaeron, Grand Marshal Othmar Garithos.
After unexpectedly bumping into Tyrande Whisperwind and Maiev Shadowsong during one of his duties, Kael’Thas partook in the Night-Elves’ pursuit of Illidan Stormrage, leading to Tyrande seemingly sacrificing herself for them later on (ambushed by the Scourge).
Upon tracking Illidan performing a ritual using an ancient relic, Eye of Sargeras, the leader and lover of Tyrande, Malfurion Stormrage (brother of Illidan) assisted them in defeating Illidan, disrupting the ritual entirely.
As the Night-Elves bickered among themselves (Illidan explaining that the ritual was an attempt to attack Arthas’s stronghold in Icecrown Citadel), Kael’Thas interrupted them by explaining the truth about Tyrande (falling into a river) instead of the cold, violent death that Maiev had reported to Malfurion beforehand.
Enraging both the Stormrage brothers, Malfurion entrapped Maiev out of impulse and went searching for Tyrande, together with Illidan, leaving Kael’Thas to return to his duties for the Alliance.
Still, his reports of his encounter with the Night-Elves fell on deaf ears as Othmar Garithos chastised him for concocting outrageous excuses.
After being given new orders to guard the people of Dalaran, Kael’Thas met with difficulties in his wake, largely thanks to Garithos’s own decision to transfer the Blood-Elves’ troop support elsewhere, leaving Kael’Thas and his men short-handed.
Seeing this opportunity, Lady Vashj offered aid to Kael’Thas, and although he initially declined, the mass of undead armies was too much for his Elven people to handle alone, thus allowing Lady Vashj and her Naga to provide extra manpower for the oncoming fights.
Victorious, he and his men were later charged as traitors by Garithos, for secretly colluding with other races outside of the Alliance.
Betrayed, Kael’thas was later released by Lady Vashj from the dungeons of Dalaran, leading him to a portal into Outland to meet Illidan.
Finding Illidan trapped by Maiev in Outland, Kael’thas and Lady Vashj stormed to his rescue, and later enacted a plan to overthrow the current Outland ruler, the demonic Pit-Lord, Magtheridon.
Following another new pact made with the Broken Draenei, their leader, Akama joined them during the final against Magtheridon, with which they triumphed after a closely-fought battle.
Still, Kil’jaeden visited them shortly afterwards, revealing that he was well aware of Illidan’s treachery and was willing to accept redemption in the form of the destruction of the reformed Lich King, Arthas Menethil.
Seeing another opportunity for vengeance, Kael’thas followed Illidan’s forces into the heart of the Frozen Throne, battling Arthas in the beginning of their armies’ clash.
Although initially gaining the upper hand, Kael’thas eventually lost against the newfound powers of the Lich King, fleeing to safety while losing possession of his prized heirloom, Felo’melorn in the process.
Later, after Arthas defeated Illidan once again, Kael’thas and Lady Vashj collected their master to recuperate their losses back in the ravaged lands of Outland once more.
